More Than the Story We Tell

An open question about identity, familiarity and the possibility of change.

We all have a story about who we are. It is shaped by our experiences, relationships and the things we have been told about ourselves especially when we are young. But how much of that story is actually true? Are we really the person we believe ourselves to be, or have we simply become familiar with that version of ourselves?

Sometimes we hold on to who we think we are because it feels safe. Even when we are unhappy, being familiar with something can feel easier than changing it. How many times have you told yourself, "That's just who I am"? And how many opportunities have you missed because you believed you couldn't be different?

Perhaps we are not as fixed/rigid as we imagine. Our past may explain how we became who we are, but does it have to determine who we become? If you stopped telling yourself the same story about who you are, who might you become?

A little less certainty.
A little more understanding.
